Highlights from Apple's WWDC 2024
Exploring Innovations, Trends, and Surprises from the Tech Giant's Annual Event
Hello Readers,
So finally after sitting back and parking the bus on the AI frenzy for almost 2 whole years, while watching its rivals Google, Samsung and Microsoft integrating AI into their devices, Apple finally jumped in the deep end.
AI is being integrated through:
iOS 18: iOS 18 revolutionizes your iPhone experience with customizable Home Screen layouts, quicker access to controls via Control Center, and a revamped Photos app for seamless organization. iMessage adds dynamic text effects, while Messages now supports satellite communication, ensuring connectivity anywhere.
iPadOS: iPadOS 18 elevates the iPad experience with enhanced features tailored for Apple Pencil users. The addition of Math Notes to the Calculator app enables users to solve handwritten mathematical expressions effortlessly. Meanwhile, Notes introduces Smart Script for smoother, more readable handwritten notes.
macOS Sequoia: macOS Sequoia elevates Mac functionality with enhanced Continuity, Safari's Highlights, and immersive gaming through Personalized Spatial Audio. Additionally, Apple Intelligence brings innovative writing tools, effective communication, and quick image creation, leveraging Apple silicon's power on M-series chip Macs.
watchOS11: watchOS11 delivers personalized health insights, customizable Activity rings, and enhanced connectivity features like Check In and the Translate app, catering to individual needs and convenience on Apple Watch.
visionOS2: visionOS 2 upgrades Apple Vision Pro with powerful spatial computing features, including creating spatial photos, intuitive hand gestures, and updates for Mac Virtual Display and Travel Mode. New additions like Follow Your Breathing and SharePlay enhance user experiences, making interactions seamless and intuitive.
So, what was Apple’s thought before entering the AI frenzy?
Well, it was to show AI integrated into the apps and products you already use—rather than powering a tacked-on perk or stand-alone chatbot and it put a big emphasis on privacy and processing things on the device when possible.
“We think AI’s role is not to replace our users but to empower them," said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, after the event. “It needs to be integrated in the experience you’re using all the time. It needs to be intuitive. But it also needs to be informed by your personal context."
This WWDC revealed Apple Intelligence, the personal intelligence system that combines the power of generative models with users’ personal context — at the core of iPhone, iPad, and Mac to deliver intelligence that’s incredibly useful and relevant.
Apple Intelligence harnesses the power of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from users’ personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks.
Beginning this month, Apple Vision Pro is also coming to more countries and regions, including China mainland, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and next month will come to Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the U.K.
Some more key highlights include:
Siri's Big Revamp: Apple's Siri gets a major makeover, teaming up with ChatGPT for more intelligent responses. Now, Siri can handle personal and public tasks like form-filling and photo searches, promising a smarter assistant experience.
Better Writing Tools: Apple spices up its apps with AI-driven writing tools, offering summaries, rewrites, and proofreading. Expect smarter suggestions and even creative prompts from ChatGPT, making productivity a breeze.
Voice Transcription Gets an Upgrade: Apple finally catches up with voice transcription in Notes and Phone apps. It's a tad late compared to rivals, but the convenience of recording and transcribing calls is a game-changer.
Emoji Fun and Basic Image Tricks: Say hello to Genmoji for custom emojis and Image Playground for simple image generation. While not groundbreaking, they jazz up photo organization and editing, adding a touch of fun to messaging.
Smarter Notifications: Apple's AI sorts out your notifications and even summarizes group messages. It's a neat feature, though nothing groundbreaking compared to what rivals offer.
